Sports Star: A Series to Honor Major Events in Sports

Sports have served as an inspiration for video games from the very beginning. The very first video game, Tennis for Two, was a sports simulator. People have been playing with sports-inspired games ever since, for the better part of the last six decades. The relationship between the two is undeniable. Even more so if you take a look at the Sports Star, a series of slot machines with a direct link to major sporting events.

Sports Star, honoring major sports championships since 2014

It all started with the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and a game developer called Microgaming, one of the leading slot machine developers of the casino industry. Developers are always looking for new ways to improve their games, and make them more appealing to the masses of players at the the best online gambling & betting site around the world. So, choosing sports as a theme was an obvious choice. But they chose the best moment to release their first slot machine dedicated to sports: Football Star. And it was a massive success, especially since they chose the perfect moment to release it: in the wake of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Football Star stood out of the crowd of other soccer-themed slots released at the time, as it didn’t focus on the fact that the World Cup was held in Brazil, but on the game itself. All its symbols, all its sounds and visuals were soccer-related, so it did work beyond the 2014 event. It is still one of the most successful slot machines at Microgaming-powered casinos.

Two years later

Microgaming is based in the Isle of Man, a British Crown dependency. Which makes it British by nature. This might be one of the reasons why the subsequent games in the Sports Star series (except for the Basketball Star, which I mentioned here) were all tied to major sports events that happened in England.

Last year, England hosted the Cricket World Cup – so, as you can expect, Microgaming released a slot machine called Cricket Star. Later in the year, England became the capital of the rugby world, hosting the Rugby World Cup 2015. You guessed it: Microgaming released its Rugby Star slot days before the Championship started. All in all, the company chose the perfect moment not only to appeal to its sports-savvy players, but also to honor the sports it found inspiration in.

The Sports Star slots

All slots in the Sports Star series share the same mechanic: they have five reels, three rows, 243 ways to win, and symbols disappearing from the screen if they are involved in a winning combination. This can trigger a cascade of wins, which makes this game appealing to all slots fans. The games all have great visuals, and sounds to match them, making them the perfect tribute to the sports they take inspiration from.
