Lingard may have to leave Old Trafford if the club brings another player for his position
Jesse Lingard is yet to sign a contract extension with his boyhood club, alerting other teams from England like Chelsea and Arsenal about his possible availability in the summer transfer period.
While United’s transfer plans remain unknown to the public, it’s quite apparent that Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young will leave the club for the Chinese Super League, while possible new arrivals like Griezmann, Mertens or someone else may further damage the chances for the young Jesse Lingard, who has so far scored in three cup finals at Wembley.
Lingard may never be a Ballon d’Or contender in his career, but nobody can deny his work ethic, character, and passion which was exactly why he was preferred for both the right wing and the number 10 position for Louis van Gaal, who handed the then-21-year-old Jesse his Old Trafford debut in the 1:2 defeat to Swansea on opening day of the 2014-2015 campaign.
It was in the same season that Arsene Wenger had decided to pay £17M for Danny Welbeck from Manchester United who was in a similar situation back then. The French gaffer was willing to offer the minutes that LVG cut short at his boyhood club, and he may try to do it again with Lingard, despite the lack of success with the Welbeck experiment.
Antonio Conte is rumored to believe that Lingard would be an ideal player for his system, confident he could shine in a wing-back role and is prepared to battle the Gunners for his signature. Lingard has not played as a right back since his aforementioned debut in 2014 when he suffered a horrible injury that prevented him from appearing again for United that season.
The new England international has made only nine league starts this season and has no goals to his name, although he has twice got himself on the scoresheet in the Europa League and has a goal apiece in the two cup finals at Wembley for his team.
