Making your first start is memorable enough, but Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs had a night that nobody will ever forget, scoring four goals in his first ever NHL game.
Matthews, the first overall pick in the NHL Draft this year, became the first player in history to score four goals in their NHL debut. While it was a great personal accomplishment for Matthews, the Leafs ultimately fell to the Ottawa Senators by a score of 5-4.
“Since I’ve been the Leafs coach, that’s the best night I’ve had since I’ve been here by 10 miles. Not even close.” – Maple Leafs Head Coach, Mike Babcock
