The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms with free agent defensive end Osi Umenyiora.

A league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Umenyiora’s deal is for $8.5 million, with a max value of $12 million, including $5 million guaranteed.

Umenyiora had 43 tackles and six sacks last season for the New York Giants. After the 2010 season, in which he had 11.5 sacks and 10 forced fumbles, Umenyiora clashed with general manager Jerry Reese over his desire for a new contract.

Umenyiora, who has a home in Atlanta, was one of the top free agents left on the open market.

In Atlanta, Umenyiora could serve as a replacement for John Abraham, who was released earlier this offseason in a salary-cap move.

Umenyiora, who previously expressed an interest in signing with the Falcons, won two Super Bowls with the Giants. His 75 sacks rank 10th among active players.
