College football has always been a huge sport in the state of Florida with three teams always seeming equally dominant in their conference, Florida, Florida State and Miami. With the new season approaching and plenty of talent on each team, which will prove to be the best in the state?
The state of Florida is ripe with football talent and tradition. The state contains three of the best teams in the country year in and year out. While some of these schools have fallen on tough times, Florida, Florida State and Miami are all giants on the college football landscape. With all three looking like they could be in for big seasons, it could be a great battle to see who comes out with the best record in the state this season.
Florida State was the team that seemed to have the most success of the three last season, despite not living up to their national championship aspirations. The team finished 10-3 on the season but lost their bowl game to the University of Houston. The Seminoles also played both of their instate rivals last season, winning both of those games handily. While the team lost a lot of talent in the draft, including superstar defensive back Jalen Ramsey, they do return some strong starters from last year, including RB Dalvin Cook.
Florida had the second best record of the trio, finishing their first season under Jim McElwain at 10-4. While this record does look impressive, it is a bit misleading as when they were matched up against top 25 opponents, the Gators finished with a record of 1-4. Florida is also matched up in the toughest conference in the country, which could make it difficult to find similar success. They do have a stock of talent, however, and are only entering Jim McElwain’s second season as head coach so improvement is not out of the question.
The last team in the state of Florida with mega talent are the Miami Hurricanes. Last season, the Hurricanes finished their season 8-5, 1-3 against top 25 teams. This was far from their expectations and resulted in the firing of head coach Al Golden. The team then hired former Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt is entering the 2016 season with hopes of a stronger season. As always, the team is stacked with talent, including an incoming recruiting class with names like Michael Irvin II and under the leadership of Richt, could have a strong season in a weakening Atlantic Coast Conference.
All three of these Florida giants have a chance to have a great season this year and only time will tell which team will end up as the kings of Florida.
