List of MLB Rookie of the Year Winners

Every season since 1947, baseball writers convene and vote for an outstanding rookie who had the biggest impact on the league. The player with the most votes is dubbed the MLB Rookie of the Year for their respective league, although in 1947 and 48, only one award was handed out.

Up until 1957, the term “Rookie” was left up to the voter’s discretion, but afterwards was further defined as a player who had less than 75 at bats or 45 innings pitched in their previous season. In 1971, the qualifications were changed again to include players with less than 130 at bats, 50 innings pitched, or 45 days on an active MLB roster. The qualification standards apply only to seasons played in Major League Baseball, which therefore qualifies MLB rookies who have played overseas. Past winners who have spent time playing professionally elsewhere include Hideo Nomo, Kazuhiro Sasaki , and Ichiro Suzuki. Furthermore, Jackie Robinson and Don Newcombe both spent time in the Negro Leagues, prior to their Rookie of the Year awards in the majors.

In 1980, following a tie for the award in the American League, the voting method was changed to it’s current form, where each voter nominates three rookies.  A first-place choice is given five points, a second-place choice three points, and a third-place choice one point. The award goes to the player who receives the most overall points.
