The sports world was shocked to learn of the passing of Jose Fernandez, the 24 year old pitcher for the Miami Marlins who died in a tragic boating accident early Sunday morning. The Marlins postponed their game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, but resumed play against the New York Mets on Monday. The entire team wore #16 Jose Fernandez jerseys in honor of the late pitcher, and Marlins owner, Jeffrey Loria said it would be the last time anyone would don the number for the Marlins.
Dee Gordon, a left handed batter, took the first pitch of the Marlins first inning from the right handed batters box in honor of Fernandez, and two pitches later hit one of the most emotional home runs we have seen in a long time. Barely able to make it home, Gordon crossed the plate in tears, sharing embraces with his entire team.
