If Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez is looking for an extension from the club, he might not want to hold his breath. The 29 year old outfielder batted .303 with 22 HR and 68 RBI for the Tigers last year, despite missing nearly two months, but the front office is seemingly reluctant to hand out extensions at this point – especially considering that Martinez’s next contract could be well into 9 figures.
Tigers GM Al Avila said the team was “working way above its means” which is a roundabout way of saying that the team would be looking to reduce payroll. Many front office experts are expecting Martinez to be traded this off season, likely in exchange for minor league prospects.
